Bryce Canyon National Park
We traveled from Page to Bryce Canyon to escape the heat. The choice to go to Bryce was a last minute one and I am glad we made it. The weather is perfect. The travel is across the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. We stopped at two visitors centers along the way.
Big Water Visitor Center
Kanab Visitor Center
The Big Water visitor center has impressive exhibits on paleontology. Walking through and reading about the discoveries in the area it struck me that all of the exhibits were recent finds (2005). The visitor center was fun, a good way to break up the day and learn about the area. I really like stopping at visitors centers on our travels. Sometimes for me I can set the expectation of arriving someplace as the goal. Visitor centers allow me to reset on the journey rather than the destination.
The Kanab visitor center was more focused on the discoveries in the rocks and the view into recent history that the geology offers us. The visitor center had an interesting display of rock samples that were stacked to represent the rock types and periods.
Driving up to Bryce is picturesque, we arrived via Scenic byway 12. The drive is rewarding as temperatures decline as we ascend. The scenic byway is starting to represent the colors you will see during your stay.
Location
We decided to stay at Ruby’s Inn RV Resort, the choice was awesome as we were close to the entrance of Bryce Canyon. Allowing us quick access for ranger talks, astronomy ranger events, and cycling in the park. Ruby’s also had a shuttle stop which the National Park bus stops at. The shuttle is not available to us as we travel with dogs, however the shuttle is in high use by many visitors. The proximity to the park is awesome and we would stay here again.
Ruby’s has many events and attractions. We enjoyed a horse drawn carriage ride out to Bryce Canyon Tropic Ditch. Water running through the canyon was implemented by the Latter-Day Saints in the 1890’s. The irrigation ditch and the dam for Tropic reservoir allowed for water storage and reliable irrigation allowing cities to be established here. Ruby’s also had a good buffet, I was impressed.
We boogied out of Bryce Canyon due to a wildfire that started in Deer Springs. The smoke plumbs were surrounding us and we decided to get out. Hope all are safe!
