San Antonio a BBQ excursion

Food and Drink

I immensely enjoy BBQ, Donna and I decided to spend about a week in San Antonio so that I could chase the best BBQ in and around the city. In my opinion Burnt Bean is the best I had. We will be returning to Texas for more BBQ on the way home. The recent set of trips we have been on is to join the Rolling to the Big Easy WBCCI Caravan. The caravan is a 13 day adventure taking us to key points in Louisiana for food, learning, and fun. We are excited to join a caravan. Cheers to being the furthest East we have ever traveled.

I learned at least two things about Texans on this trip.

  1. Texans don’t rest, they picnic

    Stop and Picnic

  2. BBQ/Smoking food is a staple, so much so, public smokers exist in parks.

Burnt Bean

Hands down my favorite, 1 hour outside of San Antonio in Seguin, Burnt Bean has the best Turkey and excellent brisket. The brisket was #1 in the places I was able to visit, The smoked turkey was the real standout winner, best I have ever had!

Pinkertons

The BBQ was good, the sides were tasty. Jalapeno cheese rice and the Jambalya (duck+sausage) were tasty. All in, I liked Pinkertons, everything was good, the line was organized, communication from the staff about what was available was refreshing. The location was great, we walked the river front with the dogs, then joined the line and were able to eat outside. Grabbing a beer while in line made the time pass quickly.

2M Smokehouse

2M was tasty, shortest line, the meat was good, but not nearly as good as pinkertons and nowhere close to the quality at Burnt Bean. We rode our bikes from the KOA along the river path. Riding a bike to BBQ should be a requirement, allowing for additional calorie burn.

Coffee

Hands down the best coffee in San Antonio is at NoFi. Go here, you will enjoy yourself and the coffee. We did buy beans at Whats brewing I thought the bean quality was medium to good. They had a nice selection of beans however the shopping experience left much to be desired.
Theory Coffee Company had excellent espresso. We also enjoyed breakfast tacos from Naco Mexican

Beer

Seems the west coast IPAs are disappearing the further East we travel. Many stores along the oil fields are stocked with what sells, mainly the American staples, Bud, Keystone, Miller, etc.. It is clear to me that fancy west coast beer is not in demand.

Where we camped

We stayed at the San Antonio KOA. We all enjoyed the campground, it was on a wonderful green belt that enabled us to ride bikes and take the dogs on good walks. I will likely lobby to return to the KOA the next time we visit San Antonio

The Dogs

Minny

Minny

If you are family, close friends, or you are traveling with us, you likely know that Minny was very sick, she has passed on. I lag a bit behind on blog posts usually a week or two. The update here covers our discovery of Minny’s illness.

One evening Minny didn’t want to eat all her food, Minny loves food and historically has never not finished a serving. We were able to get a vet appointment the next day. The vet ran multiple tests and determined that Minny had a mass on her spleen. The mass and spleen were bleeding internally. The diagnosis is horrible, we have limited time with Minny left. We are very sad knowing this will be Minny’s last road trip. We are fortunate to have spent time with her. Minny is still singing, nudging for scritches, and biting brothers hind legs. The veterinary office we used in San Antonio was awesome, they got us in quick, was able to run all the tests we needed, and came to quick conclusions. The doctor was awesome and staff well trained and efficient.

DooWee

Doowee

Doowee has known something is funky with Minny for a few weeks, he has been spending considerable time smelling her stomach. We are convinced he could smell her tumor/injury.
