Chillin' in Chama

Location

For the next few weeks we are attending two rallies, this is our first. Chillin in Chama. We rarely plan our travels, when I say plan, I am referring to locations to stop. We do plan a general direction. IE: places to see. We however do not plan places to stay. Often it is rare if we have a place to stay more then 5 days in advance. Rallies are a different story, they require more planning. EG: We have to be at a place by a certain date and time, we also have to leave by a defined time.

Arriving Thursday afternoon after a short trek over from Santa Fe We landed directly at check in time. We were the third or fourth airstream in line. We got setup quickly, sadly it was still hot upon arrival. First impression (What the Fluff), lots of cottonwood seed, so much cottonwoood seed, at points it behaved like flurries of snow.

We got setup quickly in a nice spot that backed up to a green open space. I had worries about allergies and the cotton wood, however only minimal eye burning and the occasional scratchy throat if swallowed the cottonwood seed.

The campground was awesome. Check-in was a breeze. The facilities are awesome at Sky Mountain Resort. The laundry had this slick signup sheet that allowed a pseudo reservation. We feel less guilty if using many(all) machines when a reservation exists. The common areas here are great, charcoal grills in the grassy park, clean laundry, and a nice pavilion for use by our group.

Nineteen airstreams showed up for the rally and we were evenly spread around the park. We walked the park many times with the dogs. Doo-wee enjoyed having a poo-pen to poop-in. After the first day we were craving more trails to walk on. Although we had direct access to the river, river access was cumbersome and we did not spend any time on it. When I went back to the river, I felt as if I was walking through others campsites. Some of the river/access/shore was also washed out.

I joined the group for happy hour, digested the announcements. I was looking forward to the weekend, we had morning coffee scheduled, happy hour in the afternoon, arts and crafts on Friday, and a wool factory tour.

The wool tour was fascinating, I got the opportunity to spin wool, and ask many questions about production with a loom. The product and quality at Tierra Wools is impressive. Apparently they raise 800 head of sheep to supply their products.

Arts and crafts night was fun. Been a while since I sat down to do art. Such a nice activity and it was well planned by the rally hosts. Donna and I both took time to make art. Donna
