Food and Drink

Muffaletta

I had two Muffaletta’s when I was in New Orleans, One was delivered(hot), the other acquired from Central Grocery(cold).
I prefer the sandwich cold, a heated muffaletta is cheese and grease forward, although the olives help break up the fat fighting the bread, tapenade to me tastes better when it’s cool. I am a fan of the muffaletta.

Po’boy

We tried all the greats. Here is my overview. Roast beef is the best Po’boy. The roast beef should be messy and nearly impossible to eat with your hands. Even if you can’t eat it with your hands, you should. As the most recent Carl has said: If it doesn’t get all over the place, it shouldn’t be in your face. Although we tried many Po’boys, three were my favorite.

Donna has a differing opinion on Po’boys, she feels they should be pakced with fish or shrimp, they should be spicy and crispy with the right amount of acid. The bread should be crispy and chewy, and the ingredients should coalesce. Donna had a few less sammies then I did, however she and I both labelled the same palce as number one.

Parasol’s

This is a great neighborhood bar and PoBoy shop. The outdoor seating was great, the road was closed and patrons of all ages were hanging out. I feel that this place made me feel like I was at home in New Orleans. Not a knock to the restaurant, the cashier was having a really rough day, she was barley holding it together. A few times watching her interact with others I expected her to explode into a tirade. She did not, however it is a memory I will likely always have. I can picture myself in 10 years discussing the PoBoy shop with the cashier that was having an awful day. The scenario of a person being visibly angry is a reminder that details are hard to remember, feelings are easy.

Commander’s Palace

We were excited to get reservations at Commander’s Palace. Donna and I got dressed up and grabbed an uber. The people in New Orleas really make the city. Our driver took us to dinner in a Jeep that had been customized for hunting. We all conversed about hunting, traveling, and enjoying the lands. I am not sure I have ever had a more fun uber ride.

Commander’s Palace is a New Orleans staple, I would consider it one of the places to go. They are owned by a large restaurant group and have an excellent reputation. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff is awesome. I was surprised at how poor the food was, I don’t want to be too critical, but a majority of what we ordered was not good. The Shrimp were overcooked, my steak was near well done when ordered Med-Rare. We had the trio of soups, we were excited to try the varieties, all were missing anything that made them standout. Overall a disappointing experience.

I would not recommend. The likelihood that you have a better experience is high.

Good PoBoy. Yummy pickled Green Beans to cut the fat. Killer PoBoys

Alma Cafe

Yum. Yummy pisco Sour. Excellent food, well executed breakfast/brunch. Not often I am impressed by breakfast out, I often will skip breakfast out since it’s one of my favorite meals, and I am often disappointed in the skills/love that move places put into breakfast. Of course a few exceptions exists, like MBB. As of January 2026, the original location of Alma (Where we went it closed). Visit the Alma website for more information.

Pond Coffee

We took a boat across the river and explored the Bywater neighborhood. Pond coffee was on the list of places to stop. I enjoyed the coffee and was impressed by the care in brewing. The facility was busy and coffee was good. Had a fun time talking coffee with the barista. This was my first experience with chicory in coffee, I don’t love it. Try it out for yourself.

Domilise’s Po Boy & Bar

We went here in the afternoon, the food was decent, parking was easy, not one of our favorites however it was worth the visit.

Congregation Coffee Roasters

I liked the coffee here, bought a few bags of beans to enjoy for the rest of the travels. Would visit and buy coffee from them again.

Tout de Suite Cafe

Like this place. More of a upscale greasy spoon had nice outdoor seating with Doowee. Great neighborhood feel.

Oceana Grill

Basically a place to eat with Doowee. Nothing to really say, not bad, not great, just food.

Central Grocery and Deli

Best muffuletta go early, The sandwich is big. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Herb Saint

Cochon

This was one of our favorite places. Higly recommend having dinner here. Everything on the menu was awesome, we sat at the kitchen bar and were impressed by te care and attention to details. go Here

Cafe Degas

The best Po’Boy we had. Off the beaten path, worth visiting.

Gentilly Wings and Seafood

A random dinner with people we did not know. The food was not good, however the company was fun.

Buffa’s Bar and Restaurant

This was a fun place to grab a drink. Locals spot with a spicy bartender who clearly took no BS from anybody. Although the spciness was directed and nearly all patrons he was nice to us. It was clear to me he was intentionally trying to drive certain types of customers away. From what I could tell, he did not want patrons to order food or listen to music. After chatting each other for an hour or so the behavior seemed like his normal, had a subset of regulars, and was a good bartender (minus the driving paying customers away).

Coffee

Hey

Loved this place, went a few times, the espresso was good and meet a few bicycle peeps here for the weekly rides.

Exploring New Orleans

Destrehan Plantation

touring this plantation was a real treat. The docent was impressive and we had a fun time learning about the duties, rules, and products of New Orleans.

WWII museum

Not to be missed. I suggest budgeting a full day, more if possible. I found the South-East Asia theater exhibits the most interesting. The main reason the museum is in NOLA is due to the Higgins boats We took a guided tour with the same docent we had meet at the plantation the day prior. He was an excellent tour guide who added much value in our time spent.

Where we camped

After staying outside the city at the (https://airestreaming.com/trips/la/new-orleans/#the-marina “The Marina”) we spent two weeks in the city at New Orleans French Quarter RV Park. We loved the location, beware the noise levels of the city and the freeway will be present, We adapted quickly to the noise and were ecstatic about being close to all the things we wanted to see in the city. When we go back to NOLA we will stay here again.

The Dogs

DooWee

Doowee A Vet Visit was required. Lakeview Veterniary Hospital. We were happy with the service and care. Doowee lost his sister and was having a hard time adjusting. We were missing Minny immensely. Time in the city helped us adjust to not having Minny with us.
