Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Rolling to the Big Easy

Breaux Bridge and Lafeyette

Poches fishing camp is a cajun campground. I don’t know what a cajun campground is, I will tell you the experience we had. The campground was awesome, each site was on the water and spaced properly from neighbors. The walking trails/paths/roads were enjoyable. The premise of the location is that you show up to camp and fish. I believe they have their own fish hatchery on site. The fishing does not require a license (All private). The caravan hosts had a competition for the best fish. I was never clear on the rules for what made the best fish, I didn’t plan to partake in the competition. The fun part was, everybody was catching fish. One couple stopped counting how many fish they caught after forty (caught). I don’t think I have ever caught a single fish, I can’t imagine catching forty. The views from each campsite were awesome, everywhere I looked was a nice view of the lake, people fishing, airstreams, and people having a good time.

Food and Drink

Poches Market and Restaurant

The restaurant/shop is a counter service establishment. Food was stored in a deli case, the amount of food they had was staggering, which I am of two minds of, 1. You sell so much because it’s good. 2. You don’t sell any. I was pleasantly surprised to be impressed with the food. We arrived at nearly the end of the day and customers were arriving and leaving every minute with food they ordered for pickup.

Prejeans

My best external gauge of how good the food is in a public setting, is the quiet factor. If you are sitting with a group of people and everybody shuts up at the same time, it means their mouth is full, in turn, indicating the food is good. Prejeans had this impact, we were sitting with 50+ people, the room was noisy, nearly a roar, then the food arrived. The decibel level dropped to near nil.

Bayou Teche Brewing

The beer was good, One beer was actually disgusting, a king cake beer. The taste of king cake lingered for way too long. I tried everything on tap, I was happy having beer with other caravan attendees.

Cafe Sydnie Mae

Donna and I rode bikes here. The food was awesome, the service and the cocktails even better. I would visit Breaux Bridge just to eat here.

Swamp Tour

One of the organized events was a swamp tour. Champagnes Swamp Tours Donna and I both enjoyed, We observed many swamp animals (Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Alligators, Egrets, etc..) We also learned that a swamp is a floating forest and a bayou is a slow moving river. The tour was informative, the cypress forest was impressive. I love the pictures from the swamp.

Where we camped

The Dogs

Minny

Minny
Minny died at Poches, it was a somber morning, the fog rolled in, then then skies cleared, and the air got warm. Minny, Doowee, Donna, and I all laid on the grass together. We sang to Minny, told stories about our favorite times, and gave lots of cuddles. Minny never showed any fear, she cuddled back and enjoyed our time together. Minny could not stand, I think she knew her time was at an end, she never showed any pain or fear, she was happy to be with us all the way until the end. We were fortunate to have a vet come to the campsite and help Minny pass. One of our rules is that if euthanasia is required, do it in the home. The intention being that the stress on the dog is considerably less. It’s important to us that time leading up to the last moment is as comfortable as possible.

DooWee

Doowee
Doowee has lost his sister. He is very sad, he was with us through the whole process. although he was close, he also was staying away from sister. Doowee knew that she was very sick and has been close to her and extra gentle.
