Highlights for me: Snow plant, hiking through burnt forest, mushrooms, lots of mushrooms. Finding awesome boondocking spots

Where we camped

We liked the campground and surrounding area. However we will likely use a boondocking spot the next time we visit Lassen. The campground was not starlink friendly, nearly every site had a covering of trees that prevented enough clear sky. Fortunately we were at the front and able to place our dishy near the road. The campground has a cafe that is located on-site, the cafe seemed to be fairly popular with travellers and was consistently busy. It was fun to look outside and see people playing games, eating, and generally having a good time. The walking trails were limited here and we found ourselves walking around the campground often. The facility was large enough that we could spend twenty minutes walking. A downside is that some of the neighborhood kids on electric powered bikes were romping around the campground.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

The park is impressive. This was our first visit and I feel like you can see most of what the park has to offer in a couple of days. More if you were doing any back country hiking/exploring. Back country adventures are not our thing since we always have the dogs. The established hikes here are amazing. Two notable hikes for me was the quick and easy Reflection Lake trail hike. We were here in June and I was able to see a snow plant. snow plant

Another highlight for me was hiking through a burnt forest. In 2021 the Dixie Fire burned nearly 1 million acres, Much of Lassen’s forests were burned (~73K acres). The beauty of the forest had me amazed at every turn. I highly suggest hiking the Bumpass Hell Trail.

Lassen has every volcano type in its borders. It was fun to learn about the volcano types and visit sulphur works. The sulphur works area is small as compared to Yellowstones hydrothermal areas, however it’s worthwhile to see.
