Chiriaco Summit

We live in Santa Monica, getting out of the city is near impossible due to traffic. Driving in traffic is stressful, more so with Olive attached. When we travel, we travel at night, we know this is taboo. Truthfully, I like to travel at night, I put in as many hours as I can behind the wheel then find a place to sleep. I feel this is the spirit of what the RV is. The ability to take everything you need with you and enjoy your time anywhere.

Chiriaco Summit has free dry camping behind the George Patton Museum. This was a great stop for us, we left Santa Monica around 2300 and arrived at the summit about 0230. Grabbed a few hours sleep and was in Phoenix by 1030. This campground is a few miles from the Joshua Tree entrance and is an option if park campgrounds are full.

Location

The campground is a little hard to find at night, however if you pull into the summit and half way between the exit and the fuel station, take the first left after the museum parking lot. Drive the dirt road about .75 of a mile and turn left. Google map link above for reference.
