Kartchner Caverns
Location
Notes
Meticulous care has been taken to maintain the health of the cave. The cave is alive, growing, “breathing” and can be visited by all. The formations seen at this cave are impressive to say the least.
What is even more impressive, the care over the years the stewards of the cave have taken to maintain its health. When visiting the cave, material from the outside is minimized by introducing mist, decreasing the chances of floating material contaminating the cave.
The cave is fully accessible for all ages and abilities. The cave walkways have been designed to allow washing without impact to the cave.
Reading up on inception/acquisition of the cave into state ownership. The acquisition took many years for the state to complete. Extreme care had to be taken to prevent unplanned visitors to the cave, The original spelunking team that found the cave was exceptionally secretive to the point they were driving state assembly around the area with blindfolds and requiring that the people brought into the know keep the location secret. The state has a historical write up on the cave. The most interesting to me is how well everybody was able to keep the cave secret. The cave was discovered in 1974, introduced to the state parks in 1988 and was opened as a state park in 1999.
